③Sworn Deposition by Major SAKURAI, Fumio

This is the fourth of a series of articles pertaining to the Tongzhou Massacre, which has been submitted for inclusion in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register; a sworn deposition from the official record of the “Tokyo Trials”.
Sworn deposition number two was made by Major Sakurai, who was Platoon Commander of the 2nd Regiment stationed in China.
He was ordered to rescue Japanese residents in Tongzhou, where he entered at about 4: p.m. of July 30. As a platoon leader he was ordered to sweep the southern half of the walled city. He closely saw the spectacle of the massacre of Tongzhou. He testified to what he saw at that time in a sworn deposition. (Translation into English was done by Defense Language Branch of the Court).
